Rainbows CEO scales Great Wall of China
Our wonderful CEO Dee Sissons is taking on the challenge of a lifetime by scaling the Great Wall of China.
In September next year, Dee will take on our 25th anniversary China Trek with her husband, Mick (65).
Dee (61), who started her position as Rainbows’ CEO in May, said: “I have always wanted to go to China and now I can do it for something which I am passionate about. It will be incredible to see one of the most beautiful places in the world while raising money for the children and young people at Rainbows. What an accomplishment.”
For nine days, the couple will be part of a team that takes on one of the Wonders of the World. They hope to raise thousands for our hospice. “I have the most amazing job in the world,” said Dee. “This is one of the ways I can give something back to the children, young people and their families.”
Starting in Beijing, participants will walk thousands of steps, reaching heights of 1,000 metres. For one night, the team will sleep under the stars on the Great Wall itself and tours to Tiananmen Square and The Forbidden City are also part of the experience.
Over the years, Dee has taken on several physical challenges but nothing of this scale. “I am not as fit as I was,” said Dee. “But I know I can do this. My plan is to lose a little bit of weight and then start a training plan. There are some big hills near where I live and Mick and I will be loading our bags with heavy stones and doing a lot of walking.
“When you get to 61, you start to reflect on what you have done in life and what you can do. I feel China will be a great place for reflection; so for me, this challenge is perfect. I just can’t wait to take it on.
“If anyone is thinking of doing this event but is unsure on signing up, then I would say not to be afraid of the challenge. We have a really fantastic team at Rainbows who will look after you not only during the trek, but also during the preparation.”
To celebrate our 25th anniversary, we will also be staging a Morocco Trek and a London to Paris Bike Ride.
Participants need to be signed up to the event by January 24. To find out more or get involved, visit rainbows.co.uk/chinatrek contact Nancy Lillington on 01509 283917 or [email protected]
