Pupils at the Stoneygate School in Great Glen have spent the last few weeks planning and creating the 12-foot giant guy, who will take pride of place on the massive bonfire this Saturday (4 November). The shell of the guy is made of pink fabric, which was stitched together and was then stuffed with old newspapers. The competition to design the guy’s face was won by seven-year-old Kenshi K, who said: “I thought about a one-eyed pink guy – but it has come out better than expected. He looks really cool!” It is hoped the showpiece fireworks fundraiser will help the hospice make up to £80,000 to help support youngsters at the Loughborough hospice with life-limiting conditions. David Palmer, Stoneygate’s Head of Maths, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Rainbows hospice, as we have in previous years – and it helps the children understand what an important local charity it is.” The ever popular children’s fireworks will be co-ordinated to Disney music and are sure to light up the faces of younger children, while the main display is once more set to wow Bonfire Night revellers. There’s also an exciting funfair for thrill seekers between 5.30pm and 10pm, with a variety of stalls, bars and food outlets onsite to enjoy. And of course, all ‘pennies’ raised will go towards supporting youngsters and their families when they need it the most. But remember, remember…to book early to avoid disappointment, following last year’s sell-out success. Vicki Brunt, Rainbows Event Fundraiser, said: “Our Bonfire Night event is a brilliant evening of family fun. And every penny we make will go towards supporting youngsters and their families who need our support. But we do urge people to book early to avoid disappointment. “This year’s spectacular guy is an additional bonus – what a great job the kids have done for us again this year!” Gates and funfair open at 5:30pm, with the children’s fireworks display taking place at 7pm. Bonfire lighting is at 7.30pm with the main firework display starting at 8pm.
